Life Runs on Loops

"All the returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships, or knowledge, come from compound interest." — Naval Ravikant

Reset (career, friends) versus Repair (family, health, finance)

You see "Vicious Loops" all over life.

You join a new company, and perhaps you make a bad first impression. You make a mistake, or maybe you come off as incompetent in the first week. Suddenly, your momentum is pointing down.

Because you started on the wrong foot, you spoil a relationship with a colleague. That colleague influences others, and suddenly, people are warned, "Don't work with this guy."

Now, you are cut off from the flow of information. You miss the gossips circulating in the team. You miss the best work items. Because you are working on low-value tasks, you look even more incompetent. This kills your confidence, making it hard to perform well, which leads to more mistakes.

This is the Vicious Loop.

You can see it in every area of your life, including career, health, wealth and relationships. It is designed by nature in such a way that once you are in it, it is incredibly hard to escape. It requires a tremendous external force to break out. And the worst part is that it bleeds to other areas of your life. Frustration at work bleeds into your home life, and health and finance. A bad health can affect your career and finance. A vicious loop in one part of your life can bleed into every other part of your life.

But there is an alternative: The Virtuous Loop or Positive Momentum.

When you start with positive momentum, it puts you in a loop where you are pushed upward by the universe. In a career, that means you start with confidence. Confidence attracts opportunity. Opportunity builds competence. It is an upward spiral where life gets easier as you go.

But not all areas are the same. The major difference is whether there is a Reset Button or not. Here are my thoughts on few important areas.

Career

In your career, if you are deep in a vicious loop where your reputation is ruined and your confidence is zero , sometimes the smartest move is to hit the reset button.

Find a new job! It doesn't matter if it pays less or more. What matters is that you reset your momentum to Zero. In the old loop, you were at negative 50, fighting an uphill battle just to get to neutral. In a new job, you start at zero with a clean slate. The friction is gone. It is also important that you know how to steer yourself uphill from zero, Otherwise you end up in the vicious loop again.

Friendship

Friendships are also something that comes with a reset button. If a friendship has turned toxic and is draining you, just remember that there are millions of people in the world. You can just say, "I don't want this". You can politely distance yourself and find a circle that creates a virtuous loop from day one.

Family

This is where it gets dangerous. You cannot hit reset on your children or your parents. If you are in a vicious loop with your child, you cannot just "find another child."

Because you cannot reset, you must repair. And repair is harder than replacement. It requires you to swallow your ego. It requires admitting you were on the wrong side of things. You have to apologize to the child or the parent you hurt.

"I am sorry. This is where I went wrong. I value you."

Your goal here is just to push the rock uphill from negative to positive. Once you get that relationship into positive territory, the virtuous loop takes over, and the relationship starts to heal itself through positive reinforcement.

Finance

Financial life doesn't come with an easy reset button and it is the most obvious loop to understand.

  • The Vicious Loop: You are in debt. You pay interest, which eats your income, which forces you to borrow more.
  • The Virtuous Loop: You have assets. Your money makes money, which buys you more assets.

But the real cost of the financial vicious loop isn't just money; it is Decision Fatigue.

When you are broke, every tiny decision becomes a mountain. "Can I afford this coffee?" "Can I fix this car part?" You spend all your mental energy on survival, leaving no energy to make the big decisions that could actually help you grow.

The 0.01% Rule: The goal of wealth isn't just buying things; it's buying out of decisions. If you have enough money, you can apply the 0.01% rule. If an item costs less than 0.01% of your net worth, you don't think about it. You just buy it. This automates the small stuff. It frees up your brain to focus on the things that matter: your health, your relationships, and your growth.

Once you are deep in debt, breaking the vicious loop in finance is hard. You have to understand where your leverage is and work really hard at stopping the bleed. It takes a lot of sacrifice, knowledge and external help to get you to a virtuous loop, but it is definitely worth it.

Health

Finally, there is health, and probably the most important and foundational loop. Once you are in a vicious loop in this area, it destroys every other area in your life, be it career, finance or relationships.

If you are stressed (from work or debt), you might lose your hair, your skin ages, and your self-esteem drops. This causes more stress. You start stress-eating, damaging your internal organs, which drains your energy, making you less capable of handling the stress.

This isn't just a mindset problem. It is biology. A vicious loop floods your system with cortisol (stress hormones), which physically inhibits the parts of your brain responsible for long-term planning. You aren't just 'weak', you are chemically handicapped.

Good diet, sleep and exercise are non-negotiable and should be the first priority of anyone wanting to stay happy in their life. This will help in every single area of your life.

Virtuous Loop

If you look at your life, you are likely in different loops in different areas. Maybe your career is spiralling up (Virtuous), but your health is spiralling down (Vicious).

The ultimate goal is harmony. To have your health, your relationships, your career, and your wealth all spinning in Virtuous Loops simultaneously and reinforcing each other. Life gets a lot easier at this point.

If you are stuck in a vicious loop today, stop trying to fight the momentum with brute force. Look for the leverage point. Look for the reset button. And if there is no reset button, look in the mirror, take the blame, and start pushing that rock back up the hill.

Either reset it or repair it, Do not leave it there eating into other parts of your life!

Let this be your resolution for 2026. Pick one area today. Ask yourself "Does this need a Reset or a Repair?" Then push the rock. It is not easy, but you'll thank yourself later!
